English and Math Tutoring
Vecinos Unidos is an after-school program for students in grades 1-6 in the Herndon area. The volunteer organization offers tutoring assistance for basic reading, writing and math skills. Many of our children do not speak English at home and are at heightened risk of falling below their grade level. Vecino Unidos' goal is to encourage them to develop healthy learning habits that will lead them towards success in school; thus, we are on a dedicated mission to help!
Tutoring typical hours are Monday-Thursday, between 4:30-6:00 pm ET. Sessions last for approximately 90 mins once a week. However, we have adjusted to becoming remote during the past year to adapt to the impact changes from COVID-19. We are currently seeking volunteers that would like to work with us in person for the fall semester. To start, we are on a Monday and Wednesday program schedule to assist students until we can gain enough volunteers to completely re-open back to our normal operations. There is currently a need for more volunteers on Wednesdays.
We ask that volunteers commit one day a week and participate weekly on that day for the program. We are flexible in working with your schedule and understand that occasionally you might have to miss a session, but we can organize coverage when needed. This way, our students can develop relationships with the volunteers, and the volunteers will better equip the volunteers to help by spending time together, getting to know more about the students, and learning their strengths and weaknesses.
C-World would soon provide teenager volunteers to Vecino Unidos to tutor.
